S-L-I-D-E-S-H-O-W is a slideshow style exhibition that you experience an image with a slide projector. The slide changes only once a month. This S-L-I-D-E-S-H-O-W will be held for one year and is a very slow slideshow that 12 slides in total are projected. The art experience of seeing only one slide carefully once a month will transform the way of facing to our contemporary busy society. These messages by the artists in each slide will slide your everyday life and start to influence that little by little. Please enjoy contemporary slow art experience by appointment only.

An image is so busy now. From now on, the busy image might dead from overwork. Videos, images on the internet, photographs, paintings and so on, the total amount of the 2D information that is created artificially can’t be measured. Even in the digital data, "by 2020 the digital universe - the data we create and copy annually - will reach 44 zettabytes, or 44 trillion gigabytes", EMC estimates[1]. It is impossible to watch even all of the images on the timeline of social media every day. Image is there, but no longer there. What the busyness threaten the existence is not the only image. The crisis of image is also the crisis of ourself. The vortex of the image is about to swallow us with its own death. Since long ago, human has been watching the world in image. What do we watch now? What don’t we watch? Today when the death from overwork of image is forecasted, thinking about “what is image?” is also thinking about “what is our world?”. S-L-I-D-E-S-H-O-W that watches one image carefully is an exhibition that faces the problem like this. In this S-L-I-D-E-S-H-O-W, “S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E” that is deferent from “FASTIMAGE” will be suggested for one year as 12 images slideshow. Is it possible to prevent the death from overwork of image and us?

FASTIMAGE is an image that is consumed in the short run. As fast food and fast fashion, it is produced and consumed in large quantities and especially the images in big data after the internet is FASTIMAGE. In short, FASTIMAGE is busy. A priority of last 10 years that has to do with the internet is followers, likes and total views of the video. The one who controls the number rules the world. Speeding up by this episteme is so extreme now. The intention is sometimes called “Instagram Mentality”[2]. Images focusing on the visual impact spread to the world but the FASTIMAGE is hard to become established because these comes and goes one after another. To make matters worse, the time become numb to even the impact now. Or It’s hard to recognize impact as impact. Speeding up of image makes time and labor for analyzing one image short and makes the power of image itself weaken. The world overflowing images also seems to be lit up lightly but the brightness makes all things invisible because it’s too bright. Or the light is not light but snow, the pure white snow that has no weight lies thick on the world and then maybe we are falling into a very cold whiteout. Whiteout by FASTIMAGE will freeze the world image itself and will vanish it. In the paradoxical excess of “image is lost by image”, we need to leave FASTIMAGE once in order to live our next world, don’t we? Zarathustra once said, “the Great Noontide”[3], the world that has no shadow just after the sun rises overhead. Whiteout by FASTIMAGE invites the Great Noon and then it will project the next image. That’s just S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E.

S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E is an image that is consumed in the long run. As slow food and slow life, it has slow cycle of production and consumption and especially the images before the internet is S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E. In short, S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E is not busy. It can also be considered that the cycle of FASTIMAGE that never stops once it started has already ended because it has no end. FASTIMAGE are falling into an eternal recurrence. On the other hand, S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E has not only slow circulation speed but also has even temporary stop as there are sometimes hard cases to consume it. Because uncanny elements that prevent the cycle are included in there. For S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E, FARTIMAGE is bland. For FASTIMAGE, S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E is very tricky. These three pointed out the image of the mediocrity, the speeding up and the end. S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E, however, that is different from dying FAST IMAGE will revive the dead. The process will neither a heart-warming moment that city dweller can get at province nor ER where is no time to lose. Dealing with an image on cardiac arresting needs long time. Because S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E exists in a logic that is different from the busy world. What will be the world image by S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E as CPR?

Briefly, the crisis and the resuscitation of image was already surveyed. Summarizing the contents above theoretically, it will be “our world image that was lost by FASTIMAGE is reconstructed by S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E”. So, in practice, what is the way that makes S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E possible? The answer is simple. The practice will be done by using a slide projector. Tracing the brief history of media that image emerges, it will be “phone ← TV ← movie ← photograph ← painting”. When the media changes from the photograph to the movie, image started to quit to be material. Looking back the turning point in more detail, magic lantern in 1659, photograph in 1827, slide projector in 1881, cinematography in 1892. These were invented. A slide projector became popular in the 1950s and was used for entertainment at home with the family and friends. There are so many stories on one slide and a slideshow watching these images one by one was an important opportunity that gives them various conversation. One painting is also the same. People have been contemplating, discussing and fighting while watching a painting. An image has been our square and the basis of our world. S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E brings the fixation of the information to us. The world is constructed by layering the fixed images. Considering a video as a series of still images, we are watching countless paintings in the mobile phone’s video every day. As mentioned previously, however, FAST IMAGE doesn’t become established. FASTIMAGE prevents from our constructing the world. On the other hand, in this S-L-I-D-E-S-H-O-W, digital data as S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E is converted to slide film as S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E and then you will watch the image carefully by using a slide projector. What kind of the world will we construct by the iconographical analyses experience? More or less it will be a world that is different from ever before. On the great noontide when the sunlight reaches the bottom of a well that is usually invisible, a vain can be seen. It is possible to say that an exhibition S-L-I-D-E-S-H-O-W where S-L-O-W-I-M-A-G-E flows is the vein, isn’t it? Although there is no guarantee that the grand water is drinking water, if it's possible to drink it, "a new morning"[4] will come.
